When I was at college I had never heard of college textbook rental. Perhaps it did not exist then, but I think that it is a fantastic idea, especially in these times of financial difficulty. A textbook can vary in price but they are normally a lot more expensive than other types of books. It is sometimes possible to get discounts from college book shops or if the college make a bulk order for a class, but even then you are likely to be spending out a lot of money. The library will have a few copies but these will be limited and a lot of people will be trying to use them. In my experience, it was never worth trying to rely on these as one person would get it out and keep renewing their membership for the whole semester. In order to stop this some were put on short term loan but even these were massively popular and you could never borrow it for long enough to get all of the information that you needed at one time. This is why I will be using text book rentals if I ever do a course again.
